Saigon as “The Town in the Kapok Forest”
According to the old dictionary “Đại Nam Quốc Âm Tự Vị” by Huỳnh Tịnh, Saigon was linked to “củi gòn” (kapok wood).
Some historians assume this region was once covered by kapok-open forests; therefore, the Khmer people called it Prey Nokor (which literally means “the forest city”).
This name was abbreviated and transformed into Saigon later.
Saigon as a Prosperous Trading Land
There is a writer, Dương Hồng Sến, who proposed that when the Chinese migrated here in 1773, they built canals and called this area “Đề Ngạn”. By the time this name was mispronounced as Saigon, it must have been known as a prosperous land of trade.
