    What are the Vinh Moc Tunnels and their role during the Vietnam War?

    What are Vinh Moc Tunnels?

    The Vinh Moc Tunnels were a shelter and a place of habitation for Vinh Moc's villagers and the Vietnamese soldiers during the war against the U.S.-backed South Vietnamese government.
    Among 114 tunnel systems of tunnels built in the Vinh Linh District, the Vinh Moc tunnels are the largest, most important, and beautifully designed tunnel system of all.

    Location

    These tunnels are located in Central Vietnam, about 40 km from Dong Ha City or 15 km from Ho Xa town in the Vinh Linh district of Quang Tri province.

    Purpose

    The main functions of the tunnels were:
    To avoid bombing raids by the U.S.
    To protect civilians
    To use for living, hiding, or military tactical purposes

    The story of the construction

    One interesting story is about the commander who led the tunnels project. Le Xuan Vy was the chief of the local police station. Even though he had only completed education to primary school, he was able to manage the construction of the tunnels from 1966 to 1967.
    It only took about a year for the soldiers and villagers to dig out these amazing tunnels; it demonstrates extraordinary will and unity.

    The Unique Structure of Vinh Moc Tunnels

    It is almost 2 km long and has three levels (the deepest is about 28 meters underground).
    13 entrances, some leading to the sea, others serving as emergency exits.
    There are facilities such as 2 wells, meeting rooms, a clinic, and a food storage.
    Incredibly, 17 babies were born underneath the ground, a beautiful representation of life.

    The historical role and significance

    It was a "village underground", where over 400 people lived for 6 years.
    It was a completely safe place during the continuous U.S. air bombing raids.
    It provided the north front line support and contributed to the eventual victory in the south.
    Today, it is more than a tourist destination; it is still a living testament to the spirit and creativity that Vietnam's had for warfare.
