The History of Áo Dài Through Different Periods

Early Origins of Áo Dài (15th Century)

In the 15th century, the first development of the Áo Dài emerged from a traditional Vietnamese women's garment called Áo Giao Lãnh.
The Áo Giao Lãnh had a few basic features that would lay the groundwork for the beautiful and elegant design of the Áo Dài we know today:

    • Long tunic.
    • Large, wide sleeves.
    • Two large side panels.

Although the Áo Giao Lãnh was quite plain in comparison to later designs, it provided the framework for the beautiful design of the Áo Dài that followed.

Áo Dài of the 17th-18th Centuries

By the 17th and 18th centuries, the Áo Dài evolved into the Áo Ngũ Thân.
The Áo Ngũ Thân combined elements of:

    • Traditional Vietnamese design.
    • Tailoring techniques influenced by China.

The Áo Ngũ Thân reflected and represented:

    • Social status.
    • Formal and dignified attire.
    • Values in Confucianism.

Both men and women wore the Áo Ngũ Thân.

Áo Dài in the 20th Century (1930s Modernization)

A significant change occurred in the Áo Dài in the 1930s when artist Cát Tường (Le Mur) created a new design for the Áo Dài.
    These new designs were:

    • More fitted to the body.
    • Focused on accentuating feminine lines and shapes.

This was a turning point in Áo Dài history in Vietnam, as it made the Áo Dài more modern and stylish, yet preserved its traditional beauty.

    The Modern Day Áo Dài

Today, there are many different styles of Áo Dài available:

    • Classic traditional designs.
    • Modern and creative interpretations.
    • Casual and formal/ceremonial designs.

Regardless of the style, the Áo Dài is still very popularly used for:

    • Tết celebrations.
    • Wedding ceremonies.
    • School uniforms.
    • Cultural events and performances.

The timelessness of the Áo Dài allows it to continue to be a bridge between the past and present.
