The cathedral was the life's work of Father Tran Luc (Cu Sau), who took more than twenty years to build from 1875 to 1879.
According to legend, when Father Tran Luc visited Hue and met King Tu Duc, he was captivated by the harmony and majesty of the royal buildings. He asked himself why only kings could live in such beauty.
He went back home with a vision:
To create a sacred place of equal beauty to a palace, not for royalty but for God.
