Woman of Virtue and Moral Integrity

Nam Phuong is believed by many to have encouraged Emperor Bao Dai to relinquish his claim to the throne of Vietnam in 1945, thereby avoiding the possibility of additional bloodshed at a time of great crisis in Vietnam.
In addition, during the famine in Vietnam immediately after World War II, when the imperial treasury was nearly depleted, she gave her own gold and used her own wealth to help feed the people.
As a queen, she was known to be a devoted wife and mother; she was known for being faithful, gentle, and fully committed to her family.
Many view Nam Phuong as the quintessential image of a modern, yet dignified woman in a traditional context.

    Her Timeless Beauty and Dignity

Nam Phuong was born into one of the wealthiest families in Vietnam and thus possessed a unique combination of East meets West, as far as physical beauty and education go.
She was crowned Miss Indochina three times and was not only recognized for her physical beauty but also for her intelligence, good manners, and fine character.
While Nam Phuong's elegance was never over-the-top or flashy, she did possess a regal, aristocratic composure.

A remarkable love story between Nam Phuong and Emperor Bao Dai

Nam Phuong met Emperor Bao Dai at a party in Da Lat, where their relationship blossomed rapidly.
Before marrying Bao Dai, she requested two things from him:
She wanted to be crowned empress, and she wanted to maintain her Catholicism.
Both of these requests were unprecedented in the Nguyen Dynasty.
According to reports, Emperor Bao Dai stated that he would rather remain single for the rest of his life than marry anyone other than Nam Phuong - a unique declaration for a Vietnamese emperor.

    Wisdom beyond palace walls

Unlike many royal consorts who spent their lives confined within the palace walls, Nam Phuong engaged in an active public role.
As the first lady of the empire, she actively supported social work, education, and charity, working tirelessly on behalf of the poor and promoting learning throughout society.
The impact of Nam Phuong was felt not due to the fact that she held power, but because of her intelligence, compassion, and quiet authority.
