Paul Lee

The best way to explore the beautiful culture of Cham people is by visiting the Kate Festival in My Son. Long ago, there was a powerful Champa Kingdom in Southeast Asia with rich traditions. This festival is so unique and exciting, from sacred rites to exuberant dances and music. At VIET DOVE Travel, I am excited to take you through the Kate Festival at My Son: The Celebration of Vibrant Cham Culture. Let’s look at the highlights of the largest festival at a UNESCO World Heritage site!

The Name and Origin of Kate Festival

    • Kate (derived from" Katik"), which means a month in a Hindu calendar, indicates the variety of how the Cham people borrowed Hindu traditions. What is most impressive, is that this festival only occurs in Vietnam and not India, making this 100% a Cham festival! Based on what they learned, they adopted and made something new.
    • “Kate” (pronounced distinctly from the Indian "Katik" or "Katikka") reflects Hindu influence on the Champa Kingdom and festival. It begins on the first day of the seventh month of the Cham calendar (generally October) and lasts for the entire month. I love how the festival feels like a link to the past! Wouldn’t you want to see it for yourself? A My Son Sanctuary tour from Da Nang with a professional guide and cultural experience is the perfect way to take it all in.

    Cultural Meaning of Kate Festival

The Kate Festival has so much meaning for the Cham people, here is what it represents:

    • Giving Thanks: It is a time to acknowledge gods and former kings, and to express gratitude for their blessings
    • Praying for Good Weather: The festival is conducted during the change of the season, and people pray for good weather during harvest time
    • A New Year: It is also a new beginning with hopes for good fortune and a great year to come
    • Community Building: There are lots of dances, eating and celebrations together that bring you together with all your friends and family
    • Celebrating Fertility: The Cham believe in fertility and prosperity, so there are prayers and wishes for life everywhere. I find it very interesting that their relationship to farming is so deeply embedded.

When I participated in the first festival I felt really connected to their culture and traditions. It is as if the whole village is alive and joyful, there are so many people celebrating together, it was amazing.

Exciting Activities at the Kate Festival

    • The Kate festival consists of two main parts - ceremonies and celebrations, and they are both at least exciting! The ceremony is where Hindu monks perform rituals, such as bathing and dressing the statue of Linga, and praying for good crops and good lives for everyone.
    • It was a cool experience to view everything, the whole atmosphere was so calming, fun, and meaningful. Then we get to the best part of the festival - the performances! I watched the scarf dance and I thought Cham women move so nicely and gracefully, showing off their softness and femininity.
    • I loved the next dance, the fan dance, where the girls are dancing like ripe rice ready for harvest, all in colourful outfits. It was so peaceful and beautiful, and with so much meaning!
    • If you like the live spirit of the women in dance, you will love the Kate festival! I would definitely bring your kids along! There has never been a better opportunity than a Best My Son Sanctuary tour from Hoi An to ensure everyone is part of the cultural celebration.
