Golden Rice Terraces in Sapa: When and Where to Capture the Best Views
Sapa’s rice terraces are one of Vietnam’s most iconic landscapes, and seeing them at their golden peak is a must for any traveler.
In my experience, nothing is more unforgettable than wandering in terraces with yellow fields, and that’s a treat for any photographer.
Let’s have VIET DOVE Travel show you the ins and outs of when to find the golden rice terraces in Sapa!
Best Time to Visit Sapa for Golden Rice Terraces
The golden rice season only occurs once a year. Here’s how you can make the best out of it:
Early Views:
- Around May: Farmers seed their rice.
- Around July: Young rice is already growing green. Young rice requires careful care and attention.
Peak Season: Late August to September
Late August and the whole of September, the time they turn from green to golden!
Weather Tips During Harvest Season
Daytime temperatures are fairly pleasant, around 25–27°C, although occasional afternoon showers may occur.
Nighttime, a bit set up at about 15-17°C, so a warm sweater would suffice.
Tip:
This is peak season, so sorting out hotels, homestays, and tours as soon as practical is essential if you’d like to keep having good views at the right rates.
Top Viewpoints to Capture Sapa’s Rice Terraces
Here are my favorite spots to capture Sapa rice terraces:
Cat Cat Village - Sunrise Photography Spot
Altitude is roughly 1500m above sea level. It’s an intimate village of romance. The golden terraces meet the traditional houses. Early morning light in misty weather makes combo shots just as nice for taking.
Muong Hoa Valley - Scenic Wide-Angle Views
About 30km from Sapa town, there are also villages such as Lao Chai, Ta Van, Nam Can, and many more. The winding stream, the traditional stilt houses up the valley, are theme shots suitable for wide angles.
Lao Chai & Ta Van - Sunset Golden Views
This is my favorite place: A high, wide-open spot with unobstructed views; not many visitors know about it.
You can get the whole Sapa terraces from above, especially better at sunset in late September.
Where to Stay to Enjoy the Golden Rice Terraces
Homestays in Cat Cat, Lao Chai, and Ta Van
Basically, we selected a hotel or homestays allowing the requesting sunrise to wake up in the morning overlooking the rice terrace; generally looking out at the heated golden fields.
Lovely places like Lao Chai, Ta Van, and Cat Cat village will be okay.
Hotels with Terrace Views in Sapa Town
Make sure you book early, especially around harvest time, which guarantees visitors' immigration to Sapa with lots of photographers likely joining you lift.
Tips for Photographers and Drone Users
- Fly afternoon, or in the morning, for the most dreamy light with less haze. Fly DRONE early in the day, get soft lights, no real haze.
- Respect for other villagers, and at no time should you fly directly over their roofs.
- Always check weather forecasts; drones perform best in calm, sunny conditions.
Conclusion
That’s how short the window of these amazing rice terraces art in Sapa may be and turn the mountains from black to gold.
