Before your trip to the Tunnels, let's explore things that you need to know about this incredible site with VIET DOVE Travel.
Origins of Cu Chi Tunnels
Cu Chi Tunnels were constructed in 1946 as a part of the resistance to French colonization.
Small hideouts used by resistance fighters developed into a massive underground tunnel system over 250 kilometers long and considered one of the Seven Most Remarkable Underground Wonders in the world.
During the Vietnam War, the Tunnels served as a primary military base for the Viet Cong. They allowed soldiers to carry out surprise attacks, move supplies, and safely communicate with each other while remaining undetected by their enemies.
Life Underground: What It Was Like for Vietnamese Soldiers
Imagine living below ground for several weeks, months, or even years. The Tunnels had three different levels with elaborate designs that included connecting bunkers, conference rooms, kitchens, hospitals, and traps.
Three Levels of Cu Chi Tunnels
- Level 1 (3m deep): Included air vents, cooking spaces, and traps.
- Level 2 (5m deep): Had rest space, shelters, and ambush points.
- Level 3 (8 - 12m deep): Functioned as the military headquarters, stored weapons, and surgery rooms, safe from almost all bombs.
Living conditions were really difficult. For example, soldiers followed very specific rules such as:
- “Move without traces”
- “Cook without smoke”
- “Talk without noise”
The ventilation systems were creatively concealed beneath tree roots or termite mounds to protect them from detection.

The Role of Cu Chi Tunnels in the Vietnam War
While the tunnels provided soldiers with protection, they also represented a symbol of Vietnamese perseverance.
From these subterranean bases, soldiers conducted counterattacks against U.S. and South Vietnamese military personnel, particularly during large-scale campaigns like Operation Cedar Falls (1967).
The tunnels allowed the Viet Cong to continue living, planning, and fighting while the enemy remained unaware of how close they were to the enemy.
